Penny Oleksiak becomes Canada’s most decorated summer Olympic
Before many Canadians retired for the night, Oleksiak battled to bronze in the women’s 200-metre freestyle.
It is her sixth Olympic medal and second of these Games, after anchoring Canada’s 4x100m freestyle relay team to a silver medal over the weekend.
“I’m not done,” she told CBC immediately after climbing out of the pool. “So I hope there’s more coming.”
Oleksiak has qualified for the 100m freestyle semi-final, which will take place on Wednesday night.
And Oleksiak isn’t the only Canadian woman swimmer lighting up the pool; as the country woke up Wednesday, Canada’s 4x200m women’s relay finished second in its heat, to secure its spot in the final.
Canada’s Ellie Black is out of the gymnastics all-around final
The Canadian Olympic Committee says 25-year-old Black — a medal contender in the event — sprained her ankle during a training session Tuesday and will not be competing in Thursday’s all-around final.
“We are hoping that she is still able to compete in the beam final on Aug. 3,” COC chief sport officer Eric Myles said in a press release.
Black holds Canada’s best-ever finish in the all-around event following a fifth-place finish at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
She is not the only favourite to miss the event. American Simone Biles, the reigning Olympic champion, withdrew from the all-around final to focus on her mental health. Biles earlier withdrew from the gymnastics team event final.
Tennis players wilting in Tokyo heat
Tennis star Daniil Medvedev of Russia struggled Wednesday in his match against Italian Fabio Fognini and took a medical timeout on court.
When the umpire asked if he was alright, Medvedev offered a blunt response: “I’m fine. I can finish the match but I can die. If I die will the ITF (governing body International Tennis Federation) take responsibility?”
Medvedev defeated Fognini to advance to the quarter finals.
Canada settles for eighth-place finish in rugby, Fiji takes gold
The Canada men’s rugby sevens squad ended their Olympic debut with a 26-7 loss to Australia on a hot and humid day.
Fiji, the reigning Olympic champion, defeated New Zealand 27-12 to take gold while Argentina beat Great Britain 17-12 for bronze.
