Chatham Ballhawks teams won medals at three volleyball tournaments on the weekend.
Carleton wins weekly award
Bridget Carleton of Chatham is the Women’s National Basketball League player of the week after averaging 14 points, 10 rebounds and 3.5 assists in two wins by the JCU Townsville Fire.
The former All-American from Iowa State is in her first season in Australia.
Carleton had 15 points and a team-high nine rebounds in an 83-76 win over the Sydney Flames on Sunday.
She had a double-double with 13 points, a team-high 11 rebounds and five assists in a 102-69 win over the Canberra Capitals on Friday.
Midget Lakers win Silver Stick
The Wallaceburg Lakers won the midget ‘BB’ championship at the 22nd annual Women’s International Silver Stick Finals on Sunday in Sarnia.
The Lakers beat the South Huron Sabres 4-3 in the final. They also defeated the Stratford Aces 3-1 in a semifinal after going 3-0-1 in the round-robin.
Ballhawks win three medals
The Chatham Ballhawks won the Ontario Volleyball Association’s Challenge Cup – Trillium ‘A’ 17-and-under boys’ tournament Saturday in Kitchener.
They beat the top-seeded Waterloo Tigers 25-18, 16-25, 16-14 in the final to finish with a 5-0 record.
They beat the LVC Rage 24-26, 25-17, 15-7 in a semifinal and the EVP Eagles 26-24, 25-21 in a quarter-final.
Connor O’Donohue, Clark Vlasman and Clarke Denomy were the Ballhawks’ players of the tournament.
Also Saturday, the Ballhawks White won bronze at the Challenge Cup – Trillium Green ‘A’ 14U girls’ tournament in London.
The Ballhawks swept the KW Predators 25-20, 25-21 in the bronze-medal match. They were unbeaten until they lost to the LVC Explode 25-11, 25-10 in a semifinal.
On Sunday, the host 16U Ballhawks won silver at the Challenge Cup – Trillium ‘A’ 17U girls’ tournament at Chatham-Kent Secondary School.
The Ballhawks lost to LVC Fire Inferno 25-19, 25-23 in the final after beating Twin Bridges 25-11, 22-25, 15-12 in a semifinal and sweeping Forest City 25-14, 25-19 in a quarter-final.
