Shumanski scores three TDs in JV Cougars' win

Tyler Shumanski scored three touchdowns in the Chatham-Kent JV Cougars' 33-6 win over the Brantford Bisons.

The Chatham-Kent Cougars lost 38-8 to the Brantford Bisons in the Ontario Football Conference varsity league Saturday in Brantford.

Ethan Joseph caught a touchdown pass from Ethan Jordan, who was 11-of-21 for 146 yards.

Jon Cartier ran 12 times for 75 yards, Jordan had 30 rushing yards and Nakoma Scott made three catches for 55 yards.

Connor Wright, Cam Creechan and Quinton Emerick were the defensive leaders for the Cougars (3-2-1), who are fourth in the West Division.

The Cougars will host the co-leading Waterloo Predators (4-1-0) this Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Chatham-Kent Community Athletic Complex.

JUNIOR VARSITY: Tyler Shumanski scored three touchdowns in the Cougars’ 33-6 win at Brantford on Saturday.

Darion Bacik-Hadden threw 24- and 23-yard touchdown passes to Shumanski.

Shumanski also scored on a 55-yard punt return.

Bacik-Hadden and Logan Stefina had touchdown runs of 23 and 84 yards, respectively. Stefina kicked an extra point and Owen Stephenson had a tackle for a safety.

The Cougars (5-0-1) are tied for first in the West Division and the Bisons (4-2-0) are third.

“That was our toughest test up to this point,” Cougars coach Herb McCauley said. “It was a very physical contest and we had to work hard for every yard we got. Our defence played exceptionally well.”

Jude Pearson made seven tackles, Brayden Charbonneau and Brett Wegrzyn each made six, Koren Stewart had an interception and Cam Sanderson recovered a fumble.

Stefina ran five times for 121 yards. Shumanski made three catches for 61 yards and had five carries for 72 yards.

BANTAM: Ben Church rushed for a two-yard touchdown in the Cougars’ 28-7 loss Saturday at Brantford.

Nathan Holdaway ran 15 times for 83 yards in his first start at running back. Ashton Vink and Ayden Rioux were the leading receivers.

Trevon Smith had 12 tackles and a fumble recovery, Brennan Normandin-Kerr made five tackles, Danny Vaughan and Nathan Holdaway each made four, and Joseph Riemer had two tackles for losses.

The Cougars (1-5-0) have lost four in a row.

PEEWEE: Caleb Roberts and Skyler Mattia each scored two touchdowns in the Cougars’ 27-0 win over the Forest City Thunderbirds on Saturday in London.

Roberts scored on a 57-yard pass from Elliot Peco and on a 32-yard run. He also caught a two-point convert from Peco.

Skyler Mattia scored his first career touchdown on a 57-yard run. He later added a 38-yard TD run.

Reed Larson kicked an extra point.

The Cougars’ offence gained more than 300 yards, while the defence allowed only three first downs and forced 24 plays with negative yardage.

Conor Graham had seven tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery. Doug McKeown made six tackles, Mattia had five tackles and a sack, and Tayeshawn Hadden intercepted a pass deflected by Tezmond Hadden.

The Cougars will play their regular-season finale at 4 p.m. Saturday against the Scarborough Thunder at the Chatham-Kent Community Athletic Complex.
