Drew Denomey scored in the second overtime as the Wheatley Omstead Sharks beat the Essex 73’s 2-1 in their Provincial Junior Hockey League playoff opener Tuesday.
The Sharks placed fifth in the Stobbs Division regular season, but they went 5-0 against the fourth-place 73’s.
Game 2 in their best-of-seven quarter-final is Wednesday at Wheatley Area Arena at 7:30 p.m.
Also Tuesday, the eighth-place Blenheim Blades lost to the first-place Lakeshore Canadiens 5-1.

At Lakeshore, Seth Henderson of the Blades scored on a power play with 4:33 left in the third period to spoil Matt Tovell’s shutout bid.
Blades goalie Chris Dewulf made 30 saves. Tovell made 17.
Blake Bain, Tycen Chittle, Matt Smith, Luka Mesic and Jake Nimmo scored for the Canadiens, who led 1-0 after one period and 3-0 after two.
Game 2 in the series is at 7 p.m. Thursday at Blenheim Memorial Arena.
Sharks 2, 73’s 1 (2-OT)
At Essex, Denomey scored at 12:56 of the second overtime.
Ex-Chatham Maroons forward Braedon Caetano of the Sharks opened the scoring in the first period. Josh Pope-Ferguson of the 73’s replied in the second.
Sharks goalie Kyle Metson stopped 34 shots. Connor Meyerink made 40 saves for the 73’s.
The Sharks have allowed a total of only eight goals in their six wins over the 73’s.
