The Chatham Maroons will have their work cut out for them at the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League’s season-opening weekend.
The Maroons will play two reigning regular-season division champions during the GOJHL Showcase on Sept. 6-8 in Pelham.
They’ll face the Niagara Falls Canucks of the Golden Horseshoe Conference on Saturday, Sept. 7, at 1:30 p.m. and the Listowel Cyclones of the Midwestern Conference on Sunday, Sept. 8, at 10:30 a.m.
Niagara Falls also won the Golden Horseshoe playoff title, while Listowel lost in the Midwestern final.
The Maroons were third in the Western Conference regular season and lost in the first round of playoffs.
All 26 teams in the GOJHL will play two games apiece in the showcase, which returns after a one-year absence.
The showcase was cancelled last year due to infighting between teams over the league’s fees and budget, among other issues.
The Maroons will play five preseason games. They’ll visit the Cambridge RedHawks on Sunday, Aug. 18, in Woodstock at 4 p.m., play a home-and-home series with the Vipers on Sunday, Aug. 25, at Thames Campus Arena at 2 p.m. and Wednesday, Aug. 28, in LaSalle at 7 p.m., and play another home-and-home series with the Flyers on Thursday, Aug. 29, in Leamington at 7:10 p.m. and Tuesday, Sept. 3, at Chatham Memorial Arena at 7 p.m.
