Jr. hockey roundup: Navy Vets push Mounties to the brink

Woodstock is one win from advancing to the Provincial Junior Hockey League’s Doherty Division semifinal after taking two of three weekend games against Paris.

The Navy Vets lead the best-of-seven quarter-final 3-2 with Game 5 Thursday in Paris.

Woodstock took a 2-1 series lead Friday at home with a 5-1 win. Kurtis Christo scored twice, Chris Thompson had a goal and assist, and Noah Kirk and Drew Woods added single markers. Noah Burns picked up a pair of helpers. Keaghan Brett made 36 saves.

Tanner Mitton scored for Paris. Justin Hergott stopped 30 shots.

Each team scored on the power play.

Saturday in Paris, Brad Oldroyd scored 11:26 into overtime to give the Mounties a 2-1 win. Kyle Brezinski had the other goal. Hergott made 26 saves.

Thompson scored a power-play goal for Woodstock 13:03 into the second period. Brett made 44 saves.

Monday at Southwood Arena, Kirk scored with 3:59 left in the third period of a 3-2 win. Christo and Nick Billeci had the other Navy Vets goals. Jacob Rooke and Max Racicot had two assists apiece.

Brett made 20 saves.

Jack Gee and Eric Vander Eyk scored for the Mounties. Hergott made 38 saves.

Each team was scoreless on the power play.

Tavistock advanced to the second round of Doherty Division playoffs after a 4-1 win Sunday in Burford. The Braves swept the best-of-seven series and will face the lowest remaining seed in the division semifinal.

Zach Gladding had a goal and assist, while Zach Otto, Thomas Haffner and Brock McKenzie also scored. Josh Helgerman picked up a pair of assists.

Carter Roth made 17 saves.

Jacob Kelly replied for Burford. Caleb Ursu stopped 42 shots.

Tavistock went 1-for-9 on the power play, and Burford was 0-for-6.

Friday in Tavistock, the Braves won 7-0.

Drew Gerth and Derek Jensen had a goal and assist apiece. Brody Oliver, Ian Glendinning, Gadding, Brock Phillips and McKenzie also scored. Bradley Smith had two assists.

Jensen Van Boekel made 18 saves for his second shutout of the series. Ursu stopped 47 shots.

Each team was unable to score with the man advantage.

Norwich staved off elimination with a 5-2 win over Ayr Friday in Game 4 of their Doherty Division quarter-final.

The Centennials lead the best-of-seven series 3-1 and host Game 5 Thursday.

Benjamin Cripps, Rycol Davis and Riley Baxter all had a goal and two assists in Game 4. Jeremy Bomberry and Blake Pow added single markers. Zach Johnston made 21 saves.

Ben Demoe and Matt Patton scored for Ayr. Ryan Baux made 23 saves.

Each team went 0-for-3 on the power play.

The Thamesford Trojans are off to the Yeck Division semifinal after a four-game sweep of Port Stanley.

After a 5-1 Game 3 win on the road last Tuesday, the Trojans blanked the Sailors 10-0 Friday at home. Ryan Tremblett scored twice and added two assists. Ray Robbins had a goal and two assists, while Kolbe Doxtator, Luke Caldarozzi, Spencer Mills and Matt Granger all had a goal and assist. Tristan Walsh, Jared Caldarozzi and Tyler Arndt also scored.

Spencer Mace made 16 saves for the shutout, while Port Stanley’s Catalin Morin made 39 saves.

Thamesford went 3-for-12 with the man advantage, and Port Stanley was 0-for-7.
