New $16.6M public elementary school approved for southeast London

The Thames Valley District school board has received the green light from the province to build a new school in southeast London, the second new city school for the board announced since late fall.

The school, to be located at 2541 Meadowgate Blvd. in Summerside, will have capacity for 556 students and will include an additional 88 child care spaces and five child care rooms.

The total cost of the project will be $16.6 million, a revised figure from the $14 million first announced by the government in 2018.

Parents in the area have long called for a new school to help deal with overcapacity issues.

A longstanding priority of the Thames Valley board, it originally approved the new school in 2015. It was given initial approval by the province in March 2018, with the final approval Monday.

The new school will accommodate some students now being bused to Fairmont, Princess Elizabeth, and Tweedsmuir public schools from other areas, as well as some students from Westminster Central public school, according to a plan by the board.

In late October, the province signed off on a new $19.5-million elementary school for London’s booming northwest, the second new one there in a few years and located in a growth area the Thames Valley board considers a pressure point from high enrolment and not enough room to house all its students.

That school, its location yet to be determined, will have room for 802 pupils and 88 child care spaces.
