Man charged in alleged axe-swinging incident

Chatham-Kent police responded to an altercation between family members at a Chatham home on Monday.

A man allegedly used an axe to damage various doors in the home, as well as assaulting a family member, police said.

The 47-year-old Chatham man was arrested and charged with dangerous weapons, mischief under $5,000, and three counts of assault. He was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Taking vehicle without consent charge

On Monday morning, an officer on general patrol saw a man driving a white Dodge Stealth on St. Clair Street in Chatham, which was reportedly taken without the owner’s permission.

A traffic stop was conducted and, through investigation, police learned the man was also suspended for unpaid fines and remedial measures.

The 47-year-old Chatham man was charged with taking the motor vehicle without consent and two counts of driving while under suspension. He was released with a court date. The car was returned to its owner.

Break and enter

A woman went to an apartment in Chatham on Monday and allegedly forced her way into the residence.

She reportedly began yelling at her ex-boyfriend and another woman in the home. Police said the incident escalated into a physical altercation as the woman allegedly punched the other woman prior to leaving.

Early Tuesday, police found the woman and she was arrested. The 36-year-old Chatham woman has been charged with assault and break and enter. She was held for bail.

Warrant arrests

Early Tuesday, police arrested a man wanted on numerous outstanding warrants at an apartment in Chatham.

The 36-year-old man was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Last week, a man reportedly failed to attend court on two separate occasions. As a result, warrants were issued for his arrest.

Police found the man early Tuesday and he was arrested. The 32-year-old man was released with a court date.

Traffic enforcement

Members of the traffic unit and community patrol recently conducted traffic enforcement across Chatham-Kent.

– 25 motorists were charged with speeding;
– Five motorists were charged with driving with expired validation stickers;
– Three motorists were charged with driving with a hand-held device;
– One motorist was charged with not wearing a seatbelt and driving while under suspension; and
– One motorist was charged with smoking with children present in the vehicle.

Stolen vehicle in Chatham

Early Tuesday, a vehicle that was left running outside a business on Lacroix Street in Chatham was stolen by an unknown suspect.

The black 2013 Dodge Journey was last seen with Ontario licence plates CHNN 773.
