At approximately 1 a.m., emergency crews responded to a single-vehicle collision in the westbound lanes of the highway near Orford Road.
The vehicle left the roadway and came to rest in a treeline on the north side of the highway, police said.
The lone occupant, Anna Doto, 37, Windsor, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The westbound lanes of Highway 401 were closed for approximately seven hours as the OPP investigated.
Charges laid after attempted theft
A man was allegedly spotted on video earlier this week trying to steal money from the coin machine at a car wash in Wallaceburg.
The man was also in the company of a woman he is currently on conditions not to communicate with. The pair fled in separate vehicles in the same direction, Chatham-Kent police said.
Early Tuesday, police found and arrested the man. The 31-year-old Dresden man was charged with attempted theft, driving while prohibited, driving while under suspension, breaching his probation order and being in possession of a stolen licence plate. He was held for bail.
The woman was also reportedly bound by conditions not to communicate with the man.
The 26-year-old Dresden woman was arrested early Tuesday and charged with breaching her probation. She was released with a court date.
Impaired driving charge
Police received a call Monday night about a possible impaired driver in Chatham.
An officer found the vehicle and reportedly observed it crossing the centre line.
As the officer initiated a traffic stop, the female driver allegedly placed her vehicle in reverse and hit the cruiser, police said. Through investigation, the officer believed the woman was driving while under the influence of alcohol and she was arrested. She was transported to police headquarters for breath tests.
The cruiser sustained minor damage, but no one was injured.
A 50-year-old Chatham woman was charged with having a blood-alcohol concentration exceeding the legal limit. She was released Tuesday morning when sober with a court date.
Police found a woman in Chatham Monday who was wanted for reportedly breaching her probation and failing to attend court.
The 39-year-old woman was arrested and taken to the courthouse pending a bail hearing.
On Monday night, police located a man wanted for reportedly breaching his conditional sentence order. The 54-year-old Chatham man was arrested and was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
Theft of copper
Some time over the weekend, someone entered Southwest Warehousing on Raleigh Street and stole copper wiring from an electrical box.
