Lambton-Kent-Middlesex MPP Monte McNaughton is calling on Ontario Minister of Energy Bob Chiarelli to address the rising cost of propane.
In a letter to Chiarelli, McNaughton said his office has been receiving calls from concerned constituents. Since Christmas, Ontario residents have been facing extreme weather temperatures and those who heat their home with propane have been hit with prices of more than $1 per litre, but also an uncertainty of supply, McNaughton states in his letter.
Increased demand in the Midwestern U.S. for propane to dry grain has driven up the price, which McNaughton says should have been predicted and planned for.
Although the regulatory oversight of Canada's propane supply lies with the federal Natural Resources of Canada, McNaughton's letter to Chiarelli states: “I trust that you will turn your prompt attention to this matter and respond to me with the steps you intend to take to alleviate these important concerns.”
